KARE AROUND THE WORLD: Vienna
"Comfort is probably the most fitting word to describe the Viennese way of life," says Andy Pietrasch, our KARE partner in Austria. Whether in a coffee house or at a traditional wine tavern for a glass of wine, a relaxed atmosphere prevails everywhere, following the motto, "Let's wait and see."

Which typical Viennese specialty should you definitely try?
"Besides a perfect Wiener Schnitzel, I recommend a good Tafelspitz. According to legend, Emperor Franz Joseph's favorite dish was invented at the Hotel Sacher. It is traditionally served with chive sauce, apple-horseradish, and roasted potatoes."

Coffee Houses with Imperial and Royal Charm
"Viennese flair includes the famous coffee houses. Often decorated in a historic style, everyone meets there for delicious coffee specialties. But actually, Viennese go there to chat and gossip or to enjoy some peace and quiet." Andy's tip: The second floor in the magnificent Café Gerstner near the opera.

Your tip for Viennese highlights beyond the tourist crowds?
"The Servitenviertel with its church and monastery, as well as the Palais Lichtenstein and its park. The wonderful Strudlhofstiege, a staircase built in 1910 in the Viennese Art Nouveau style."

What sights should not be missed on a trip to Vienna?
"For those who have never been to Vienna, I recommend exploring the entire 1st district; the area is like an open-air museum. Starting with the Hofburg and the Lipizzaners, the St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Opera, and up to the architectural masterpiece of the Ringstraße with its City Hall, Parliament, Grand Hotels, museums, and theaters.

What is the best way to plan a room makeover, and where should you start?
"I always imagine what it would be like if I were moving in for the first time and the room were empty. Then I start with the large furniture pieces, such as the sofa and dining table. Next, I choose a color scheme, and the rest comes together almost by itself. Just be brave!"
